Best and Worst Anime I watched in 2015

anime

The year is wrapping up and many sites if not already, have started posting their “top 10 of 2015!” or “The best of 2015!” lists and I thought I’d get in on the action. What I’ve decided to do is give a brief description of each anime I watched that aired this year and determine what I thought where the best and worst of each season as well as overall. I am including anything I watched that aired this year. Even if I didn’t watch as it was airing or I dropped it. This isn’t just relying on how much I enjoyed a show either. I will take into account viewer opinions outside of my own (minimally), if it met my expectations or not among others. Using this rules just because I dropped a show does not make it the worst. Also if a show lasted multiple seasons I will only talk about it in its concluding season. Split-cour shows are up for both seasons they aired. Let’s get into this!

Winter:

Kantai Collection: KanColle: First anime and it’s one I dropped! I found the first few episodes interesting but there ended up being a ton of characters introduced and often when someone was mentioned, unless they were shown or someone I really liked, I’d have no idea who was being talked about. This is super popular though.

Koufuku Graffiti: Not many people talk about this. It was a nice SoL food show. It’s almost a gateway to Food Wars! As the girls have orgasmic reactions to their food but stay fully clothed. I do wish it was longer though as it was a nice show to relax to.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata: Ah the show that ended with a cliffhanger and the only thing relating to a second season so far is “it exists” Aside from that this was a fun harem with the main character making a Galge and the harem members are all part of his team. It did feel a bit rushed at parts though.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso: Despite not reviewing it this was probably the show I talked most about this season. It really says something about a story when I know it was a really good adaptation yet I’m still buying the manga as it releases in English. This was technically a Fall 2014 show but since it wrapped up in March 2015 I can count it!

The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls: I reviewed this as a poll on Blazekick and enjoyed it. There’s not much I really can add onto that review. I guess it was my introduction to idol anime and you probably know I’m big on Love Live (especially School Idol Festival) right now.

Best: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso: While most shows this season where pretty good YLIA was amazing. I rated it 10 out of enjoyment and on MyAnimeList it is ranked the 13th best and currently the highest of any show that aired in 2015.

Worst: Kantai Collection: KanColle: I went back and forth between this and Saekano before settling. I wouldn’t call either a bad show but KanColle does seem to be mainly liked by fans of the game. Since that’s not in English and I don’t know enough Japanese to play it that’s fairly limiting. I’m not sure if it ended on a cliffhanger but it did get a second season announced during the finale which is more than Saekano got.

Spring:

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (TV): I’m a pretty big fan of the manga and this was a pretty good adaptation. They skipped Korosensei and some class members kidnapping a girl in the middle of the night making her think she was dreaming which was one of my favourite chapters though which got me salty.

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken 2 Sure-me: Episodes are only 8 minutes so if you want to see an otaku and non-otaku married and living together this is the series for you! (trust me, it’s a lot funnier than it sounds)

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka: I quite liked this show at the start but near the halfway point it started getting really generic and boring. I actually didn’t review it on BK because I just said pretty much all my positives for it.

Etotama: This is kind of monster of the week and it works really week. I watched this series later but binged it in a couple days which was actually quite fast for me.

Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season: I was able to watch this all at once which is probably the best way. There are some pretty mean cliffhangers in here! I felt this year was pretty good for action anime and this was a prime example.

Grisaia no Rakuen: The first Grisaia VN was crammed into 13 episodes and hated due to rushing so the best idea would clearly be to cram the 2nd and 3rd into 10 episodes with a 1 hour special! While I have no idea how well it followed the originals it certainly flowed a lot better and was a much more enjoyable experience.

Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic: There’s just something about watching a bunch of school kids live their daily lives with nothing of real note happening that just works so well in anime. This is the second season and is pretty much just more of the same.

Hibike! Euphonium: Ah band, that thing I hated so much I would avoid it whenever given the chance. Apparently watching band class is really fun though as I quite enjoyed Hibike!. I went in expecting K-On! Season 3 and got so much more!

JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Stardust Crusaders 2nd Season: The finale of the most popular part of JoJo’s as well as the part that introduced me to the series.  What’s there really to say? This is another example of 2015 being a great season for action anime.

Nisekoi:: Thanks for the stupid name so it looks like I double-tapped the “:” key, Shaft. What’s wrong with “Season 2”? Anyway I binge read the manga during the early days of this airing which lead to me buying a Weekly Shounen Jump subscription which introduced me to some great series. That may seem off topic but that’s the only good thing I can think of that this season did.

Owari no Seraph: This does a time-skip right after episode 1 and it’s quite well done. This is another really good action anime but one may like it because battles are always as predictable as they may seem. The characters are also all mostly likable.

Plastic Memories: This was huge when it was airing due to being an original anime as well as one meant to give you the “feels”. I watched it recently and was let down in the feels department but luckily it was still a pretty good show ignoring those!

Best: Hibike! Euphonium: Yay surprises! I noticed quite a few people toting this as KyoAni’s return and it’s one of my favourite anime of all time so how could it not be here? It ended at a really good point and has a second season for us to look forward to!

Worst: Nisekoi:: Not just because of its name. I mentioned earlier I couldn’t think of any positives actually related to the show and that’s true. I know at this point the manga had a lot of filler chapters but the anime goes from chapters 51-106(into 13 episodes with S1 doing 1-50 in 20) adapting Chitoge’s mom and Haru’s introduction arcs and skipping over the amnesia arc and Marika’s friend choosing filler chapters and the spin-off manga “Magical Girl Kosaki-chan” (without even fitting it into the story) as well as reorganizing the order. I disliked it, manga readers disliked it, and some anime fans were left confused. In a season full of great shows Nisekoi: was an obvious cash grab with no care or thought put into it.

Summer:

Charlotte: If I was awarding an anime “most disappointing of the year” Charlotte would definitely receive that prize. There is so much content here it probably could have easily made a 3 or 4 cour anime yet was crammed into 13 episodes.

Gakkougurashi!: I learned the fan name “Moe-Zombie Apocalypse” which got me to check this out. Expecting K-On! and this time I got A Beautiful Mind. I’m a huge psychology buff so just the psychological aspect explored of the characters is a turn on but the story was very well written on top of that.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou: At some point I decided to start watching at least 1 ecchi harem each season and I guess I chose one with monsters? The humor was pretty good but the fan service was a little too much. It’s probably the only harem I’m honestly fine with anyone winning though.

Okusama ga Seitokaichou!: At some point I also decided to watch a short-episode anime each season and for whatever reason I started this. I thought the censored “wife theatre” moments were funny at first but they got old pretty quick. I honestly would have dropped this show if the episodes where any longer.

Ore Monogatari!!: If you were to only watch one romance anime I would without a doubt say Ore Monogatari!!. While I may like others more than it My Love Story shows the first love from both the guy and girl’s perspective so well I almost feel I’m part of it. Takeo and Rinko are so loveable too!

Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai: I watched a lot of ecchi in summer. This uses ecchi to help its story of what happens with over-censorship (which people complained about despite it airing in the middle of the night in Japan) taking a comedic approach.

Shokugeki no Souma: This is it with summer ecchi I promise! This is the first show I watched where I was caught up with the manga before it even aired. It was a pretty good adaptation although it did end right in the middle of an arc which sucks for anime only viewers.

The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls 2nd Season: I originally had dropped this as I wasn’t liking the change in tone it had from the 1st season but once it finished I binged it and found it enjoyable yet not as good as the first. Uzuki still best girl though.

Wakaba*Girl: The original manga was by the same author as KINMOZA and it follows a similar style. The studio decided to make this a bunch of short episodes instead of adding multiple short stories to one episode like KINMOZA.

Wakako-zake: Have 30 minutes free and want to add a completed anime to your list? Each episode is 2 minutes of an office lady eating in a different restaurant each day. It’s somehow so enjoyable just watching her eat her meal.

Working!!!: Working!! Is a series I think you either love it or hate it. While not the best slice-of-life series out there I still find enjoyment from it. This season not only gave us more of the antics in Wagnaria but also wrapped up the different romances it had been teasing for the past 2 seasons.

Best: Gakkougurashi!: Maybe I should go into all my anime expecting K-On! Season 3? It seemed to spawn my anime of the season for both spring and summer. Just when you think you have everything figured out something comes out of nowhere but it didn’t really because if you rewatch the last few episodes it has been foreshadowed a ton.

Worst: Charlotte: I went back and forth between Charlotte and Okusama ga Seitokaichou for a while. I settled on Charlotte because I had no expectations of the later where Jun Maeda had said he knew the issues with Angel Beats! and was fixing them. Not only did he make Angel Beats! issues worse but he created a ton more. While Charlotte may just be an average anime it was extremely disappointing and I believe it belongs as worst anime of summer due to this.

Fall:

Comet Lucifer: Comet Lucifer is a fun show that seems to be getting a lot of flak.  I’ve seen it quite lowly rated which is surprising. Yeah it’s not the best but it’s still a pretty good show and probably 8bit’s best show right now.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk: Do I have to even talk about this? I dropped it after an episode because it just felt so dumb and I have another anime later that is fairly similar but done better. Looking around it appears I’m not alone on this either.

Komori-san wa Kotowarenai!: I binge watched this series the day it ended and that was probably the best way to watch it. Each episode is 2 minutes long and really not much happens so I feel it might be boring just waiting compared to just watching basically a normal anime’s episode length.

Lance N’ Masques: This is probably the most disappointing of the season for me. The first 3 episodes were so great but after that it basically got worse and worse each episode while somehow just hovering at the point where I was willing to keep it.

One Punch Man: You haven’t heard of this? I mean, are you even sure you’ve been paying attention to anime at all this year?

Onsen Yousei Hakone-chan: This was another dumb little short episode show. This is probably one no one’s going to care about in a few years compared to the earlier mentioned Wakaba*Girl. I guess it was funny but there’s much better shows to waste time on.

Ore ga Ojousama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets♥Sareta Ken: While I liked this show a bit its humor annoyed me and since it’s a comedy I ended up dropping it. Most of it is stuff like “oh look at the ecchi joke you never see anywhere else lol!” or “OMG what’s this weird thing you commoners use! Best thing ever!” which got really tiring.

Owari no Seraph: Nagoya Kessen-hen: Another disappointment for me. After the first half was really great this half pretty much took everything I loved and either made it boring or just taken completely out. At least Shinoa is still pretty cool and Chess was introduced here!

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry: This series and Asterisk had the same episode 1 but it was much better here. The show was pretty good with some minor issues but I still had fun.

Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru: I’m not the biggest mystery fan for whatever reason. This series puts a lot of focus on the characters, both the main and reoccurring cast as well as one-offs. This, as well as the great writing and visuals, made me really like this show. The finale really killed it for me. It didn’t focus on the big mystery it was building up to instead focusing on a different one that got really rushed and the character’s relationships.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid: Not really sure why I picked this up. I like the series but there’s just way too much fan service. I watched it uncensored because I really didn’t like the giant black bars they used to censor which gives boobs all over the place and a lot are way too big. There’s a girl pretending to be a guy and looks completely flat yet when she’s naked she’s huge.

Best: One Punch Man: I was going back and forth a lot between this and Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru and while the later was declared the winner in my original draft the finale was really bad for this show while One Punch Man never had an episode I didn’t like.

Worst: Lance N’ Masques: Again I went back and forth between this Asterisk War and Shomin Sample. The reason I gave LnM worst over the one I actually dropped is LnM gave me hope and proceeded to dash it every episode after. Shomin Sample and Asterisk War just never gave me any hope and Shomin Sample was boring to me but I know others do like it with Asterisk being outclassed by Cavalry.

Year:

Well let’s give my top 10 best and worst of the year! I’m not going to go over them again as I already feel like I covered them enough (obviously not everything will be my best/worst of a season as I’m doing 5 for 4 seasons and a season might have 2 shows better/worse than another)
