Editorial – Getting Out of a Gaming Slump

Have you ever felt burnt out on video games? If so, dear reader, you’ve experienced first hand a gaming slump. A gaming slump is when you’re at a point where you’re not really interested in playing any video game. You prefer to spend your precious time doing something else. This is bound to happen to most of us that indulge ourselves hours on end playing video games. It’s just natural.

We all have our own way to deal with gaming slumps. You might find yourself binge watching a new show that you discovered on Netflix, or perhaps you prefer to spend your time outside hanging out with friends. Either way, we handle gaming slumps differently. Once you’re out of it, you start enjoying games again. Now, what happens if it’s hard to get out of this situation? What now? Well, I don’t know. I’d like to know myself because I’m currently in one that has lasted months!

My current gaming slump started near the end of September last year. Ever since, I don’t really have the interest to play a game. I’m just not in the mood for them. I’ve had this happen before, but not to the extend of lasting months. My past slumps have been short, and are usually caused by playing one single game for a long time, e.g., playing a JRPG like Persona 4 and a shooter like Call of Duty for hours on end. This time, however, It wasn’t caused by that. I don’t know what caused it, It just happened.

I’ve tried verything I could to get out of it; I took a break from games, tried easing back into them, tried different genres, etc… Yet here I am, still in this slump. Not even the PlayStation VR, a new piece of hardware that allows you to experience games in a whole new way, was able to get me out. That’s not even the worst part! Not even Persona 5 was able to get me out—seriously. I imported Persona 5 when it was released in Japan, and that still didn’t help. If you know anything about me, you know that would’ve worked.

I can still play games, but there has to be reason to play them. I just can’t pick up a game for a pure enjoyment and escape. Honestly, It’s kind of frustrating, given the fact that I write and make video content for a video game website. Which is something I would like to do for a living as a career at some point. Knowing this, you can just imagine what I’m going through. It’s like a musician losing his/her interest of picking up an instrument. It’s tough.

I’m not going to give up. I will get out of this gaming slump. I have to do it. I think it’s just a matter of time. Perhaps the Nintendo Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will do it. I sure hope so, because I do love The Legend of Zelda and I’d hate if this slump would prevent me from enjoying that game.

All in all, we all go through gaming slumps, and we get out of it in a different way. Some last days, and some last months! It’s just how it works. How do you get out of a gaming slump? I’d like to know.
